The Opening – or “The Flop Holes”, in deference to Atlantic City and the game of Texas Hold ‘Em, will give each player an early chance to see if this will be a ‘good’ day or a day to ‘fold’. The 1st Hole is a Par 4 with a forgiving drive but does require a confident approach shot. The 2nd Hole is a ’straightforward’ Par 3 that will build confidence or leave you scratching your head. The 3rd Hole is a fair Par 4 but does offer a challenging putting green and a chance to get off to a good start for the day.
The Shore Points are duly named, as you cross over Country Club Drive to get to these four holes before returning to the main course area. Hole 4 is a dogleg which has a protecting waste bunker reminiscent of the Jersey beaches. Hole 5 changed when lightning removed the two fairway trees, but new bunkers still guard the approaching fairway. Hole 6 is another Par 3, with its own choice of bunker defenses. Hole 7 gives this group of holes its name as The Shore Points, but an enjoyable hole to play. You can now return to the main course area.
Almost a a breath of fresh air these holes return you to the main course area. Hole 8 feels like the hole to really send your best drive of the day – wide open and inviting, with an elevated green that is best approached from the fairway. Hole 9 is the first Par 5 but is reachable for many, assuming you like smaller greens. If you are only playing 9, then the Homecoming was a good place to finish. Otherwise, a chance to stop at the Halfway House and then on to The Turn holes. Hole 10 feels like a longer Par 3 than necessary to start the back but no water so no complaints, even if you have to chip. Hole 11 might be named ’The Savanna’, but that gives you a lot of room for your drive. A strong Par 5 that requires a good fairway second shot and then approach shot. No matter what, The Turn prepares you to now take on the signature holes for LCC.
If the owner had only four holes around his mansion, these would be them. Hole 12 will leave you talking about LCC after you leave – but just play it for what it gives you and you will be fine. Hole 13 is another Par 5 that is fun to play, if Par 5’s are fun to play. Hole 14 has a nice bowled contour to help those who tend to drive on the right side of the fairway. To culminate the Corner, Hole 15 is a classic Par 3 – just a little water just to check there is some on the course, and a chance to challenge your ability to drive the green.
By this point, you will understand the grouping of the holes, as you now return back to the main course area for the finishing holes. Having said that, Hole 16 will offer a unique Par 5 ‘horseshoe’ turn that is certainly a bit unique, but if you owned and lived on the course you would understand the need to go around the bend. Hole 17 is a Par 4 that also just needs to be played the way it gives you, and then it is easy. Hole 18 is a strong Par 4 finishing hole you might wish was a Par 5. After which, a chance to shake hands, be impressed the course was in such good shape and now onward to Maggie’s for a rewarding beverage or meal.
